Charlotte-Mecklenburg police charged a man and a woman with murder in connection with the death of a 1-year-old girl.
According to police, officers found 1-year-old Kyiemani Aveah Brewer unresponsive around 8:24 p.m. in west Charlotte on Friday. She was taken to Carolinas Medical Center and pronounced dead a short time later.
Police said according to the Medical Examiner’s Office and after their own investigation, physical assault is what led to the infant’s death.
On Saturday, police arrested Brewer’s mother, 22-year-old Jade Sheree Butler, and her boyfriend, 21-year-old Antonio Fernelle Cathey.
After interviews with detectives at police headquarters, Butler and Cathey were charged with murder and felony child abuse. They were taken to Mecklenburg County jail.
