One person was killed and seven others wounded, including four children, in a head-on collision in north Charlotte.

Police have not released the name of the woman killed in a wreck off of Mallard Creek Road, near Sawgrass Ridge Place, on Sunday morning because her family has yet to be notified.

According to a police report, Lasonya Denise Thompson, 38, was driving a 2006 Nissan Armada with four children, ages 7 to 12, when she crossed over a double-yellow line and smashed into a 2005 Saturn Ion.

The Saturn was driven by a Hispanic woman who was taken to Carolinas Medical Center-Main where she was later pronounced dead, said police. There were two other passengers in the car who were admitted to CMC-Main with serious injuries.

Thompson and all four children in her SUV were taken to CMC-Main for non-life threatening injuries.

After she was released, police charged Thompson with Misdemeanor Death by Vehicle and No Liability Insurance.

The crash is under investigation by the Major Crash Investigation Unit but police do not believe alcohol was involved in this incident.
