Jonathan Timothy McLean was born December 19, 1955 in Gaston County, North Carolina. He was the oldest child of Haywood and Johnnie Covington of Denver, North Carolina. He departed this life on Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at the Levine & Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville.

Jonathan graduated from East Gaston High School in Mount Holly, North Carolina. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina. Upon graduating from college he was employed by Duke Power. He was currently employed with Hall Contracting Corporation, where he was vice president of the Mechanical Division.

Jonathan married Vivian Denise Bellinger and they were happily devoted to each other for 22 years. To their union was born a son, Jonathan Timothy McLean, Jr.

Jonathan was a member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, where he was president of the Greeters Ministry. He was formerly a member of Tucker’s Grove United Methodist Church.

Jonathan was active with his community. He served as a Pop Warner football coach for the Derita Redskins, as PTO vice president for Mallard Creek and Derita Elementary Schools and as a volunteer for community events. He was also vice president of the Harrington Woods Neighborhood Association and a member of the Cannon Balls Cycling team.

Jonathan leaves to cherish his memories a loving wife, Denise Bellinger McLean; one son, Jonathan T. McLean Jr.; father and mother, Haywood and Johnnie Covington; one sister, Jonelia Covington Saunders (Robbie); mother-in-law, Elberta Bellinger; sister-in-law, Veronica Bellinger Perry (Markus); and brother-in-law, Thomas Roddey.

The uncles and aunts Paul G. McLean, Steven McLean, and Marshall McLean; Mary McDowell, Doris Moore and Sylvia Jackson, all of Mount Holly, North Carolina; Edward Jones Sr. (Reverend Bernice), Upper Marlboro, Maryland; Charles Jones (Margaret) and Ponell Jones of Blackville, South Carolina; Virginia Beatty (Harold), Washington, D.C.; Rosa Harley (Charles), Capitol Heights, Maryland; Caroll Priester (Clyde), Blackville, South Carolina, and Ruby Saunders, Florence, South Carolina; special extended family. Raheed and Jennifer Saunders, and Angela Roddey, Charlotte, North Carolina and Jihan Cleveland, Sparks, Maryland. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, extended relatives and friends.

Funeral Service will be Thursday, December 27, at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church at 12noon. Visitation is from 11 a.m. to 12 noon at the church. Interment will be at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens.
