The Mint Museum Uptown will host a free screening of “Raising Renee,” an award-winning documentary about artist Beverly McIver and her sister, Renee, on Nov. 20.

McIver promised to care of her mentally disabled sister when their mother dies. McIver made the promise just as her career was taking off, and Renee became the subject of many of her paintings.

The themes in the documentary, including race, class, family and disability, also fuel McIver’s work. The film is by Academy Award nominees Jeanne Jordan and Steven Ascher.

The screening of “Raising Renee” will be from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. Nov. 20 at the Mint Museum Uptown, 500 S. Tryon St.
