Join the Harvey B.Gantt Center for an educational, inspirational and experiential workshop with writer/director Neal Jones (Forever Jones), storyteller Dr. Vanessa Figgers and cast members from the musical stage play The Evolution of Black Gospel Music. Explore cultural history through the stories behind the music. In addition to learning familiar melodies, participants will be engaged in thought provoking discussions about the role African slaves played in the creation of spiritual music and how gospel music influenced popular music genres such as R&B, Blues, Folk and Rock n’ Roll. Script readings of selected scenes from the production will allow participants to experience gospel music legends such as Rosetta Tharpe, the true Mother of Rock n’ Roll and more! The Evolution of Black Gospel Music, presented by the Harvey B. Gantt Center debuts in July at the Booth Playhouse.
