Mrs. Ollie Mae Leak Elder transitioned to her heavenly home on Friday morning, March 30, 2012.
She was the daughter of the late Will Hunter and Ida Davidson Leak. She was born in Lancaster County, SC, where the family lived until moving to Charlotte.
She received her education in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and Central Piedmont Community College. She earned a cosmetology degree from Carver College and the National Beauty Cultural League in Washington, DC.
Mrs. Elder joined Silver Mount Baptist Church at an early age. After moving to Charlotte, she was a long-time member of Gethsemane Baptist Church and later became a “charter member” of Reeder Memorial Baptist Church.
Her employment included that of a seamstress at National Linen Service, a baker for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools as well as self-employed as a cosmetologist.
The home-going celebration will take place at Reeder Memorial Baptist Church on Tuesday at 12 p.m., with visitation at 11 a.m. until time of service. Dr. C. Don Steger officiating.
Mrs. Elder was preceded in death by her parents as well as her husband of 45 years, Mr. Lonnie Elder. She also was preceded in death by her 11 siblings, two step-daughters, one step-son, and two grandsons.
Mrs. Elder is survived by her three daughters, Lonnie Miller (John), Edna Williams (Tommy), and Esther Elder, all of Charlotte; step-daughter, Marion Hagler; step-son, Lycurgus Oates (Joanne); sisters-in-law, Annie Leak and Isabelle Leak; 27 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and 21 great-great grandchildren; two goddaughters, Patricia Webster and Sherry Baxter.
