Ok, it’s the final day of the 2012 CIAA tournament. Let’s not neglect the reason this event is held each year – in other words, basketball.

For the second straight year, the women of Johnson C. Smith will square off with Shaw University in the CIAA women’s championship game. Shaw prevailed in last year’s matchup, and some on the JCSU team have not forgotten.

“…The taste is still in my mouth,” senior guard Shavonda Price, was quoted as saying in the Charlotte Observer. “I’d like to dish some of that out myself.”

Game time is at 5 p.m. Expect an exciting contest.

On the men’s side, Winston-Salem State will play Elizabeth City State.

ECS is rolling into the CIAA championship game on a hot streak, having pulled off the biggest upset of the tournament Friday by outlasting North Division No. 1 seed Bowie State 66-63 in overtime. ECS, the North’s third seed, is playing for its first championship since 2007.

Winston-Salem State, meanwhile, brought an end to Shaw’s 21-game winning streak and snapped their hopes of repeating as CIAA Champions, defeating the Bears 51-48. The Bears are 25-3 overall.

The men’s championship game is at 8:30 p.m.
