The Rev. Anthony Johnson of Charlotte died Friday, July 22, 2011 in Houston, Texas. He was 48 years old.

Mr. Johnson was born October 31, 1962 in Durham, a son of Bishop Joseph Johnson and the late Rev. Dr. Dorothy S. Johnson. He grew up in Salisbury, graduated from Livingstone College with degree in business administration and earned a Masters of Divinity degree from Hood Theological Seminary.

A pastor in the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church for more than 20 years, he had served as pastor of St. Matthews A.M.E. Zion Church in Rock Hill since 2003. Other A.M.E. Zion Churches where he served include: Hudson Grove and Redding Springs A.M.E. Zion churches on the Wadesboro/Monroe District; Wesley Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Asheboro; Price Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church in Concord; Wesley Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Danville, Va.; and Robinson Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Marshville, North Carolina.

He is survived by his father, Bishop Joseph Johnson of Matthews; brother Timothy Johnson and wife Doretha of Holly Springs, N.C.; niece, Angelica Lynn Johnson and nephew Derrick Joseph Johnson of Holly Springs, and a special friend, Paris L. Bostic, of Charlotte.

A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 29, at St. Matthews A.M.E. Zion Church, 539 Lige Street, Rock Hill. Burial will be Monday at Rowan Memorial Park in Salisbury.

The family will receive friends at the church from noon to 12:50 p.m. on the day of the funeral.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Matthews A.M.E. Zion Church.
