Mrs. Annie Pearl “Jackie” Petty Black of Charlotte, NC, passed away on January 1, 2011. She was 72 years old.
Mrs. Black was born December 1, 1936, in Cherokee County, Gaffney, SC, to the late Sheron B. Petty and the late Maggie B. Petty. She was a graduate of Granard High School in Gaffney, class of 1955. A graduate of Johnson C. Smith University with a BS degree in early childhood education, she did further studies at UNC-Charlotte.
She retired after 27 years with the United States Postal Service and was a proprietor of Hy-Ann Gifts & Hidden Treasures. She was a member of Reeded Memorial Baptist Church in Charlotte.
Mrs. Black was affiliated with many organizations, including Black Business and Professional Women, U.S. Postal Service, Urban League, Youth After 55 and Pastor’s Aid.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Cynthia L. Black, and siblings, Mr. Sheron L. Petty, Mr. John H. Petty and Mrs. Dorothy P. Smith.
Mrs. Black is survived by her husband of 51 years, Mr. Hiawatha Black; a son, Mr. Eric H. Black of Charlotte; three nieces, Mrs. Julia P. Bright (Joseph) of Gaffney, Ms. Mamie Petty of Gaffney, and Ms. Janice Petty of Suffolk, VA; a nephew, Mr. James B. Petty (Lisa) of Marietta, GA; a great-nephew, Mr. Anthony D. Petty of Virginia Beach, VA; a great-niece, Ms. Valencia Petty (Howard Brockington) of Hopkins, SC; great-great nephew, Carter O. Brockington of Hopkins; sister-in-law, Mrs. Lucille Black of Charlotte; other relatives and friends.
A funeral service is scheduled for Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at 1 p.m. at Reeder Memorial Baptist Church, 3725 Beatties Ford Road. Visitation will begin 30 minutes prior to the service.
