Marian Wright Edelman, the renowned children’s rights advocate, is coming to the Qcity Tuesday, Nov. 24, to help Seigle Avenue Partners celebrate its 10th anniversary.
The nonprofit is best known for its teaching programs aimed at disadvantaged children. It operates the Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools summer reading program. In 2009 it served more than 500 children at nine locations around the city.
“Freedom Schools addresses the summer learning loss for low-income children in a fun and culturally rich environment,” said Mary Nell McPherson, Executive Director. “We believe if we can solve the summer learning problem, we can solve the achievement gap in Charlotte Mecklenburg.”
Edelman, president and founder of the Children’s Defense Fund, recognized Seigle Avenue Partners this summer as a model program that is working to improve the lives of children.
“I am excited about all the good work Seigle Avenue Partners has accomplished in Charlotte,” she said in a statement. “The organization serves as a shining example nationally of sustainability and community support for summer learning and out-of-school time programming for at-risk youth.”
Seigle Avenue Partners will use the Edelman visit to announce future plans for Freedom Schools in Charlotte, officials said.
