Investigators are trying to piece together what happened in a Monday night shooting that left three people dead –including a 20-month-old toddler — and five injured in Walterboro, S.C.
Relatives have been quoted as saying the victims were playing cards in the front yard when a car pulled up and someone opened fire. Two adults also were killed.
According to published reports, 24-year-old Aleshia Kittrell tried in vain to shield her toddler, Shaniyah Burden, as bullets flew. Kittrell reportedly was injured as well.
No motive for the shootings was announced, though some family members were said to suspect gang activity. No arrest had been reported on Tuesday.
Walterboro, in Colleton County, is about 44 miles north of Charleston.
