Alonzo Lunsford, a former basketball student-athlete at Johnson C. Smith University, is said to be one of the survivors of last week’s shooting rampage in Fort Hood, Texas.

Lunsford, a native of Rockingham, is a 43-year-old staff sergeant in the U.S. Army. JCSU officials said he’s recovering from injuries he received during the rampage that left 13 people dead and 30 wounded.

Lunsford reportedly was standing three feet from the shooter and was shot twice in the stomach and grazed in the head.

“I looked him right in the eyes, and he looked at me,” the school quoted Lunsford as saying. “There was nothing there. I began pushing everyone out of the way when I felt the gun shots. It all happened so fast.”

Lunsford attended JCSU from 1984-88 and played basketball under head coach Steve Joyner Sr.

“When I first heard what happened to him, it was just mind boggling,” said Joyner. “Truthfully, I was at a loss for words. Thankfully, we have received word that he was just injured and is recovering, instead of it being fatal in his case. The entire JCSU family and I wish Al a strong, speedy recovery.”
