Evelyn was educated in the Mecklenburg County School system, graduating from West Charlotte High School in 1962. Evelyn was married to Larry Byrd on July 4, 1970 and remained married for 23 years until his death.
Evelyn worked with the Charlotte Mecklenburg School system and was a chef at the Marriott Executive Park Hotel.
She was an excellent cook and that talent encouraged her to go into the catering business with friends, Diane Cole and Gloria Cole, forming the company Perfect Occasion Catering. She loved to cook and anyone could get a meal at Evelyn’s house. Evelyn was also the co-founder of the Hi-Lites Social Club. Other than cooking, her favorite hobbies were watching football (N.Y. Giants), basketball (N.C. Tarheels) and just enjoying her family and friends.
Even though her health began to fail, Evelyn never lost her sense of humor, her love of family, friends or her strong will to live.
Those left to cherish her memory are: son, Eric Wallace (special friend Ann Thompson) of Charlotte. Brothers Floyd G. Wallace Jr., (Bertha) of Atlanta, Ga; Ronald L. Wallace and Samuel Reid (Willie Mae), both of Charlotte; brother in-law Erik Nowell of Charlotte. Sisters Virginia W. Keogh (Jimmy deceased) and Gwendolyn C. Wallace, both of Charlotte; two sisters in-law, Marie Nowell and Maester Nowell, both of Charlotte. Three nieces she helped raise, Regina J. Moore (Jerome), Raena M. Johnson, and Ronette W. Caldwell (David) all of Charlotte. Two other special nieces, Stephanie W. Ruben (Author) of Atlanta, Ga., and Ronda Wallace of Charlotte. She also had two very handsome grandsons Deterius and Kwante’ Stinson, both of Charlotte. A host of other nieces, great nephews (6), relatives and friends. Her play son Terry Pickett and lifetime best friends Patricia “Diane” Cole and Tink Mintor.
