Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are looking for an unknown assailant suspected of raping three women this year in a south Charlotte apartment complex.
In each of the attacks, the suspect was describe as being a black man approximately 25 years old. He’s reported to be tall with a slim build wearing a black ski mask, gloves, black shirt and black pants. The suspect may also have a cut on one of his fingers.
Each of the rapes occurred in the Yorktown Garden Apartments on Tyvola Drive, near Tyvola Mall.
The most recent attack occurred today (10/19), just after 8:00 am. According to CMPD, the assailant broke into an apartment through a sliding glass door and sexually assaulted the occupant.
The two earlier assaults occurred on Sept. 21 and Feb. 28.
On Oct. 7, a woman reported being sexual assaulted on Kentland Drive, which is adjacent to the Yorktown complex, but police say that attack was unrelated and that a suspect was arrested in the Kentland Drive case.
After today’s assault, police canvassed the area and were expected back tonight as residents return home from work. CMPD also has been working with the Yorktown apartment management to make residents aware of the crimes.
Officers have been assigned to the apartment complex for more than a month to address other reported incidents, such as burglaries and larceny from autos. In fact, an officer was patrolling the complex today but did not arrive in time to make an arrest in the latest rape case.
CMPD is encouraging anyone in the area who noticed anything or anyone unusual to immediately call 911.
Anyone with information regarding these cases can call lead Detective Mike Melendez at 704-353-0560 or phone anonymous tips into Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
