Johnson C. Smith University will host a debate between mayoral candidates Anthony Foxx and John Lassiter on Tuesday, Sept. 22.
The event, from 7 p.m.- 8 p.m. inside the Sarah Belk Gambrell Auditorium, will be the first significant meeting between the two candidates since the Sept. 15th primary.
Lassiter, a Republican, easily won his party’s nomination this week with more than 70 percent of the vote. Foxx ran was unopposed for the Democratic nomination. Both men hold at-large seats on Charlotte City Council.
“We are excited to host this event, which is part of Dr. Ronald Carter’s long-term goal to make Johnson C. Smith a leader in the community…, ” said state Sen. Malcolm Graham, special assistant to the JCSU’s president.
Graham will host the debate along with WSOC TV Channel 9 News Anchor Erica Bryant and WFAE Radio Host Mike Collins, who will serve as moderators. Candidates will answer questions prepared by JCSU and Elon University students. No questions will be taken from the audience.
JCSU has also invited candidates for Charlotte City Council and Charlotte-Mecklenburg school board to set up displays that day from 5p.m.- 6 p.m.
Elon University Poll, in conjunction with JCSU, will release a voter preference poll that week.
