A racial wall crumbled Monday night in Charlotte as black and white Masons met for the first time.

After 135 years of racial separation, members of the predominantly white Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of North Carolina visited the historically black Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of North Carolina, the Charlotte Observer reports.

Until recently, it was illegal under Masonic regulations for members of one group to step into the other’s lodge.
