Mr. Walter Jones of 320 Grandin Road., Charlotte, departed this life on Thursday, July 23, at the age of 78 at Carolinas Medical Center.
Mr. Jones was born February 19, 1931, in Charlotte, to the late Johnny and Zadiah Jones. He was educated in the Mecklenburg County School system.
Mr. Jones worked for more than 30 years at the Clorox Company, and many years at the Charlotte Observer, from which he retired in 2007.
Mr. Jones leaves to cherish his fond memories: his life partner, Mrs. Gwen Alexander; one brother, Mr. James Jones (Roxie); and three sisters, Mrs. Tillie Mae Thompson, Ms. Shelly Jones and Ms. Elizabeth Jones, all of Charlotte. He leaves also nieces, Mrs. Cynthia Jones Brown of Atlanta, Ga., and Ms. Zadiah Michelle Jones of Charlotte.
Walter was preceded in death by two sisters, Minese and Pinese Jones, and one brother, Johnnie Jones Jr.; two sons, Mr. Walter Leigh Byers and Mr. Quinten Fitzgerald Byers. Walter was father to sons Scott M. Byers, Teba Byers and Orestes Byers (Deceased) of Charlotte; and daughters Joan Moyer of Brooklyn, N.Y., Faye Holloway, Denise Byers, Elise Byers, Tina Byers, Calvenia Dozier, Palmela McCullough, Angela Pagan, Sabrina Tucker and Brittney McCullough, all of Charlotte.
He also leaves a host of nieces and nephews and grandchildren and great grandchildren and special friends.
Service will be held Saturday, August 1, at 1 p.m. in the Zechariah Alexander Sr. Memorial Chapel. Visitation will begin at noon. Internment will be at Oaklawn Park Cemetery.
