Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police are stepping up efforts to crack down on drunk drivers this Fourth of July week.

Under the “Booze It & Lose It: Operation Firecracker” campaign, checkpoints and stepped-up patrols will begin June 29 and end July 5.

North Carolina recorded 377 alcohol-related crashes, including 12 fatalities, during the July 4, 2008, holiday week.

CMPD offers the following tips:

  • Plan a safe way home before the festivities begin.
  • Before drinking, designate a sober driver and give that person your keys.
  • If you’re impaired, use a taxi, call a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation.
  • Call police if you see a drunk driver.
