Chanequa Campbell was beating the odds.

She grew up poor on the grimy streets of Bedford-Stuyvesant and was selected to attend an elite prep school called The Packer Collegiate Institute, says the Boston Globe. From there it was on to Harvard University, where she majored in sociology. She spent her summers studying abroad – London and Milan.

But Campbell never left the “hood” behind her, some say.

A couple of week before she was scheduled to graduate with honors, a drug dealer was shot and killed in the doorway of her dormitory. Now school officials are refusing to let he graduate.

Campbell has said her race and background made her an easy scapegoat.
