Docia Polk Barber, 84, was killed Friday when her car was struck by the car of an 18-year-old larceny suspect fleeing police.

The suspect, Demario Jaquinta Rollins, was treated at Carolinas Medical Center and charged with second degree murder.

The incident began about 3 p.m. when Concord police responded to a larceny call at Concord Mills Mall. They began chasing a 1997 Buick LaSabre allegedly driven by Rollins. The pursuit continued into Mecklenburg County.

Police say the LaSabre crossed the center double-yellow lines into oncoming traffic, striking Barber’s 1989 Toyota Camry head on. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The wreck occurred in the 11300 block of Mallard Creek Road.

The following passengers also were inside the suspect’s car and were treated at CMC: Jennifer Jackson, 24; Somona Johnson, 21; Chanis Craig, 20; and Jalyssa Morris, 21.

According to the Mecklenburg sheriff’s Web site, Rollins was booked into the Mecklenburg jail at least four times in 2008 on charges including larceny of a motor vehicle, unlawful concealment and disorderly conduct.
