The Kwame Kilpatrick saga has claimed more victims.
The Michigan Attorney Discipline Board has charged five lawyers with misconduct. All are alleged to have helped engineer a secret $8.4-million lawsuit settlement to conceal the text messages that drove the former Detroit mayor from office.
Some of the lawyers were city employees, according to the Detroit Free Press. At least one was in private practice but was on city retainer. Another represented three Detroit cops in lawsuits against the city.
Kilpatrick resigned after text messages emerged indicating an affair between him and his chief of staff, Christine Beatty. The attorneys now facing charges allegedly were involved in settling the cops’ lawsuit against the city to keep the text messages from coming to light.
Kilpatrick resigned as mayor and pleaded guilty to perjury after lying about the affair.
