Joyce was born in Meadowbrook, Long Island, New York. She was a graduate of West Charlotte High School and matriculated at Fayetteville State University where she majored in Business.

Confessing Christ at an early age, she joined the Clinton Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church, where she served faithfully until death. Joyce served in many capacities: trustees, missionary society (life member), choir member, Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent, Christian education director, conference delegate, Charlotte District Lay Council and Bicentennial Committee member.
