We caught up with Jamal “Gravy” Woolard the actor who portrayed Biggie Smalls in the movie “Notorious.” Woolard, a native New Yorker, talks about his role and what’s next. Some of his remarks were edited for brevity and clarity.
Q. So you live in Charlotte. What do you think about the Qcity?
I’ve been in Charlotte for awhile and I like it. It’s an up and coming city that isn’t oversaturated like Atlanta.
Q. What was it like to play the rapper Notorious Biggie Smalls in the movie?
It was an honor to play an icon. Biggie is like the Shakespeare of rap the way he put words together.
Q. What was the most difficult scene in the movie for you to shoot?
The angry scene. It was easy for him (Biggie) but for me I was hard to trigger that emotion.
Q. Have you received a lot of accolades from others for your role?
Yes, others have been very supportive. “Vanity Fair” and “Rolling Stone” named me the best new male actor. It’s a great look.
Q. Who’s your favorite rap artist?
Biggie and 2Pac the two kings. They’re still the best.
Q. What’s next for your career?
More movies. I’ll be in a new dvd movie called, “The Come Up.” It will be released in 2010.
