Jazz trumpeter Terrell Stafford will perform at UNC Charlotte this month with the school’s 20-piece Jazz Ensemble.

Stafford has been hailed as one of the great players of our time. He is a member of the Grammy-nominated Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and heads the jazz studies program at Temple University.

Members of the Jazz Ensemble will work with Stafford in rehearsal and will perform several of his original compositions during an April 21 performance. His visit is funded by a College of Arts and Architecture grant that brings distinguished speakers and artists to the school.

“It’s invaluable,” Will Campbell, director of jazz studies and assistant professor of saxophone at UNC Charlotte, said of Stafford’s visit. “Someone like Terrell absolutely is at the top of his game and is one of the finest players in the world.”

Stafford has performed with groups such as Benny Golson’s Sextet, McCoy Tyner’s Sextet, the Kenny Barron Sextet, the Frank Wess Quintet, the Jimmy Heath Big Band and the Jon Faddis Orchestra.
