Charlotte’s bedraggled economy is expected to get some uplifting news today.
GMAC Financial Services is expected to announce that it will add hundreds of jobs in Charlotte. Gov. Beverly Perdue has scheduled a 1 p.m. news conference today at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center, though he has declined to say why.
Several sources have told the Charlotte Observer, however, that the announcement will concern GMAC’s much anticipated expansion.
The timing could hardly be better. The city has seen scores of banking jobs disappear as California-based Wells Fargo bought Wachovia and Bank of America has had to slash staff amid a worldwide banking crisis.
