A former Charlotte city worker has sued alleging she was fired because she had a sex change operation, the Observer reports.

Anne Marie Clukey, who worked as an operations assistant at a Charlotte maintenance facility, alleges she was let go because she did not conform to her supervisor’s “gender stereotype.”

“I never had a problem like this before in other places I’ve lived,” she was quoted as saying on Charlotteobserver.com.

Clukey, 60, had “gender reassignment” surgery in May 2001, according to court documents.

Mac McCarley, the city’s attorney, told the newspaper the city will deny liability.
